Tripartite Committee Suggests Fixed Election Date for Sierra Leone
In a significant move, the Sierra Leonean government and the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party have agreed on 80 out of 100 recommendations from the Tripartite report. However, key disagreements persist, particularly regarding the June 2023 election results.
One notable recommendation, No. 34, suggests amending Sections 43 and 87 of the Constitution to set a fixed date for Presidential and Parliamentary elections. The proposed dates are the last Saturday of March, April, or May. This change aims to resolve the recurring issue of controversial election dates despite the constitutional 5-year terms for both positions.
Historically, the Electoral Commission sets the Presidential election date, while the President decides the Parliamentary election date. Both elections usually occur simultaneously. The amendment seeks to eliminate date uncertainties, improving planning for electoral bodies and the government.
This adjustment is expected to streamline the electoral process, ensuring smoother transitions and adherence to constitutional requirements. Although the agreement on most recommendations is a positive step towards electoral reform, the ongoing debate over the 2023 election results highlights existing political tensions. Both parties continue discussions to reach a consensus that strengthens Sierra Leone's electoral framework and democratic principles.
