Floods in Bangladesh Leave Millions Stranded

Floods in Bangladesh Leave Millions Stranded

Severe floods caused by heavy rains have affected over four million people in Bangladesh, leaving many homes underwater. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief reported that at least 13 people have died, and 4.5 million have been impacted by the flooding in the eastern part of the country.

Rescue teams are working quickly to help people in flooded areas, as large parts of low-lying Bangladesh are submerged. Nearly 190,000 people have been moved to emergency shelters, with 11 out of the country's 64 districts affected by the floods.

Feni, a district about 100 kilometers northwest of Chittagong, has been hit the hardest. Bangladesh, with its 170 million people and many rivers, often experiences floods. It is also one of the countries most at risk from climate change, according to the Global Climate Risk Index.

In Cox’s Bazar, three people drowned in the floodwaters, according to local officials. While monsoon rains cause damage every year, climate change is making these weather events more extreme.

The army and navy have been sent to help, using boats and helicopters to rescue people trapped by the rising waters.
