President Bio Kicks Off Extensive Expansion at Kenema Government Secondary School
President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has spearheaded a major expansion at Kenema Government Secondary School, initiating the construction of 34 additional buildings. This project marks a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s ongoing mission to elevate its educational system.
Backed by a $65 million investment from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) and other collaborators, the initiative is aimed at significantly upgrading the country’s educational infrastructure.
The President emphasized the wide-ranging nature of this project, which extends beyond Kenema to include both the development of new structures and the renovation of existing facilities across four government secondary schools and two technical colleges in Sierra Leone. He recognized the challenges encountered in securing the necessary funding but attributed the project’s success to his administration’s strong reputation in fighting corruption, fostering human capital growth, and promoting the empowerment of women and girls.
“I was able to secure this support by demonstrating our unwavering dedication to transparency, our commitment to enhancing Sierra Leone’s global standing, and our focus on building a robust educational foundation for the future,” President Bio remarked. He also urged parents to be actively involved in their children’s education, stressing that a solid educational base is crucial for lifelong achievement.
The Principal of Kenema Government Secondary School, Mustapha J. Mansaray, expressed his profound gratitude for the school’s selection for this project, calling it the fulfillment of a long-awaited dream. He noted that the enhanced facilities would greatly improve the learning environment, enabling the school to admit more students and better support the Free Quality Education initiative.
Deputy Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kadiatu Alie, underscored the importance of this significant capital investment. She highlighted that with the government’s additional $3 million contribution, the total funding now stands at $68 million. She described the project as a “timely and essential investment in the nation’s future,” which will benefit both current and future generations.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, President Bio extended his sincere appreciation to BADEA and its partners for their trust and support in realizing his administration’s vision.
